All of the information that fuels the information age must be processed. In fact, we process and manage information every minute of our lives, both with and without the aid of information systems. Information is a very powerful tool, and your understanding of how it is processed is fundamental to success in today's society..

Every job, project, and/or task involves decision making. Decision making is the process of identifying, selecting, and implementing alternatives. The right information, in the right form, at the right time is needed to make correct decisions.

Society is rapidly changing as the information needed to make decisions has changed from the older analog forms into digital Consider the changes in the transport of information, from word of mouth in ancient times, to documents written on paper, to telegraph, telephone and todays computers. Information that may have taken years to travel around the globe a few centuries ago can now be transported in seconds.

The transformation of data from an analog form (for example the view from your window) into a digital form (for example a picture file on your mobile phone) has allowed data to be transported, stored and manipulated in ways undreamed of a few years ago. The storage of this data in digital form is called digital media.

This topic will look at digital media.
